The only nutrient on this label that collagen production genuinely cannot proceed without.
What It Is
Humans are among a small handful of mammals that cannot manufacture vitamin C. Most animals synthesise it in the liver from glucose; somewhere behind us the last enzyme in that chain stopped working, and every milligram you have ever used arrived through your mouth.
Of everything on this panel, ascorbate has the least negotiable role. It is not a supporting player. It is a required cofactor in a reaction the body has no way to route around.
What It Actually Does
Three jobs, described without the marketing vocabulary.
Collagen will not fold without it
A newly made collagen strand is useless until prolyl hydroxylase and lysyl hydroxylase have modified specific amino acids along its length. Only then will three strands wind into the triple helix that carries load. Both enzymes depend on ascorbate to keep their iron in a usable state.
It puts vitamin E back to work
Having absorbed an oxidation reaction inside a membrane, vitamin E is left spent. Ascorbate, sitting in the watery compartment alongside, hands it an electron and returns it to service. That recycling loop is why the two belong on one label.
It unlocks iron from plants
Ascorbate substantially improves absorption of the non-haem iron in plant foods, and iron status is one of the genuinely established nutritional influences on hair shedding. That connection is indirect and it is real.

20 mg In Every Serving
Our serving carries 20 mg. Adult requirements sit around 75 to 90 mg a day and are usually met by ordinary food without effort, so this is a supporting figure rather than a therapeutic dose. Its job here is to keep the hydroxylase enzymes and the vitamin E recycling loop covered as part of a daily panel.
Freshly made collagen is a limp strand until two hydroxylase enzymes have gone along it and modified specific amino acids. Only after that will three strands twist into the triple helix that carries load. Both enzymes need ascorbate to keep their iron usable, and without it the helix never forms properly.
Who Tends To Fall Short
Severe deficiency is scurvy, and its early signs read like a list of connective tissue failing in public: bleeding gums, easy bruising, wounds that reopen, corkscrew body hairs and small red spots around hair follicles. Every one of those is collagen built by enzymes that had nothing to work with.
Frank scurvy is now rare in wealthy countries. Marginal status is not, particularly among smokers, who turn over vitamin C faster, and anyone eating very little fresh produce.

The Ceiling, And The Cautions
The adult upper limit is 2000 mg a day and our 20 mg is nowhere near it. Exceeding the limit is uncomfortable rather than dangerous for most people: cramps and diarrhoea are the usual result, because unabsorbed ascorbate draws water into the gut.
Two groups should take more care. People prone to calcium oxalate kidney stones may raise their risk at high doses, and people with haemochromatosis should be cautious because ascorbate increases iron absorption.
Where This Comes From
- Prolyl and lysyl hydroxylase both require ascorbate as a cofactor to maintain iron in the ferrous state.
- The clinical picture of scurvy is a direct readout of failed collagen cross-linking.
- Ascorbate regenerates the tocopheroxyl radical, which is why the two are studied together.

What we get asked about this line of the label specifically.
Is 20 mg enough to matter?
It covers the cofactor role, which is what a panel like this is for. If you eat fruit and vegetables you are almost certainly meeting the full requirement already, and this is a floor rather than a dose.
Should I take vitamin C with a collagen powder?
If you take one, yes, because the amino acids are useless without the enzymes that assemble them and those enzymes need ascorbate. It is also the reason we chose vitamin C over collagen in the first place.
Does it fade dark spots?
Topical vitamin C has some evidence at the right concentration and pH. Swallowed vitamin C is doing a different job, and the two are not interchangeable.
Does it help with hair shedding?
Only indirectly, by improving absorption of plant iron. If you suspect low iron, ask for a ferritin test rather than guessing.
