What Changes In Skin After Forty

Something changes in the fourth and fifth decades that is not simply "getting older", and the change is steep enough that people notice it as an event rather than a gradient. It is worth understanding what is actually happening, because it determines what helps.

The Oestrogen Curve

Oestrogen supports collagen production, skin thickness, hyaluronic acid content and sebum production. As it falls through perimenopause and menopause, all four fall with it.

The figure most often quoted is a loss of around thirty percent of skin collagen in the first five years after menopause, with a slower decline of roughly two percent a year afterwards. Whatever the precise number, the shape is what matters: this is a steep segment on an otherwise gradual curve, and it explains why the change feels sudden.

What People Actually Notice

Dryness that will not respond to the usual moisturiser. Lower sebum and a thinner barrier together, which is why the product that worked for twenty years suddenly does not.

Loss of firmness rather than new lines. Structural collagen is what holds tissue up, and its loss reads as slackness before it reads as wrinkling.

Adult acne arriving for the first time in decades. As oestrogen falls, the relative influence of androgens rises, and jawline breakouts in a woman who never had them at twenty are a common and confusing result.

Slower healing. Marks and spots that used to fade in a fortnight now take months.

More visible pigmentation. Often cumulative sun damage that was always there, becoming apparent as the skin above it thins.

What Genuinely Helps

A dermatologist, first. Prescription retinoids have the strongest evidence of anything available for skin structure, and this is the life stage where a conversation about them is most worth having. So is a conversation about menopausal symptoms generally, which is a medical matter rather than a cosmetic one.

Richer moisturisers, and fewer strippers. Ceramide-containing products, shorter and cooler showers, and gentler cleansers. Much of the discomfort at this stage is barrier disruption layered on top of the hormonal change.

Sun protection, still and always. Its relative importance goes up rather than down as skin thins, because the damage is now more visible.

Enough protein. Intake often falls with age at exactly the point where the raw material for collagen and keratin matters more. This is a bigger nutritional lever than any micronutrient.

Then the micronutrients. Vitamin C for collagen hydroxylation, vitamin D where status is low, B12 where absorption has declined with age — which it commonly does, since stomach acid falls and proton pump inhibitors are widely prescribed.

One caution specific to this stage. Anyone still able to conceive should treat the 630 mcg of vitamin A in this product as a conversation for their doctor. Perimenopause is not the same thing as menopause, and cycles can be unpredictable for years.

What To Expect From Any Of It

Slowing, not reversing. A supplement supplies raw material for what gets built next; it does not restore what has already been lost, and no product sold over a counter does. The brands promising otherwise at this life stage are aiming at the moment people are most willing to hope, which is precisely when a plain description is worth the most.

Quick Answers

Does HRT help skin?

There is evidence that systemic oestrogen improves skin collagen and thickness. It is a medical decision with a wider risk and benefit picture, and it belongs with your doctor.

Why am I getting acne at fifty?

As oestrogen falls the relative influence of androgens rises, and jawline breakouts are a common result. It is treatable and worth seeing someone about.

Is collagen supplementation worth it at this age?

Swallowed collagen is digested into amino acids like any protein. Adequate total protein plus the cofactors for synthesis is the more defensible approach.
