How The Formula Works

Skin Is A Factory, Not A Surface

The face you looked at this morning was manufactured about a month ago. Cells are born in the basal layer, spend four to six weeks travelling upward while filling themselves with keratin, flatten, die, form the barrier that holds your water in, and flake away.

That single fact governs everything a supplement can and cannot do. Nothing swallowed improves a cell that has already died and reached the surface. Copying the genome

A cell about to divide has to write out a fresh copy of its own DNA, using carbon atoms that folate ferries into place. Folate is kept usable by vitamin B12, so a shortfall in either stalls the same step, and the fastest-dividing tissue feels it first.

Assembling keratin

Hair shafts and nail plates are keratin, built from amino acids. Biotin has to be bonded onto five carboxylase enzymes before they will run, and those enzymes sit in the metabolism of the amino acids keratin is largely made of.

Building collagen

Collagen gives skin its structure and your body manufactures every strand of it. Two enzymes must modify each fresh strand before three will wind into a load-bearing helix, and both stop without vitamin C. This is the least negotiable requirement on the entire panel.

Protecting the membranes

Membrane fats oxidise in chains. Vitamin E sits inside the membrane and absorbs the reaction, ending the chain; vitamin C then restores the vitamin E from the watery side so it can work again.

Directing maturation

Vitamin A becomes retinoic acid, binds receptors sitting on DNA and switches whole gene programmes on and off. In skin those programmes decide how a cell matures on its way to the surface.

Repair and defence

Zinc runs the enzymes that remodel tissue while a wound closes and holds the shape of the proteins that grip DNA, while vitamin D drives the antimicrobial peptides that make your barrier an active defence rather than a lid.

The Part Most Labels Leave Out

Everything above describes what happens when a nutrient is absent and then supplied. It says nothing about what happens when somebody who already had plenty takes more, and the difference between those two situations is the most important sentence on this page.

Closing a genuine shortfall can change what your body builds. Adding a nutrient on top of an adequate intake usually changes nothing at all, because the enzyme that needed it was never the step holding the process up. Water-soluble vitamins in particular are simply excreted once the machinery is saturated.

So whether this works for you depends on something no website can see: whether your diet was already covering these nutrients. The people most likely to have a gap worth closing are those eating narrowly, those who have cut out whole food groups, those under sustained stress, those at northern latitudes through winter, and those going through hormonal change.

Two Numbers That Look Wrong

5000 mcg of biotin looks enormous

An adult needs roughly thirty micrograms a day, so this is well over a hundred times that. It is the figure the whole category converged on rather than one derived from a trial in healthy people. Biotin has an unusually clean safety record and the excess is excreted, and it is also the reason for the blood-test warning we repeat on every relevant page.

2.7 mg of zinc looks small

Deliberately. Zinc and copper compete for the same absorption route, and months of high-dose zinc can quietly produce a copper shortfall. A modest daily figure supports the enzymes without shifting that balance. We would rather justify a conservative number than print an impressive one.

Why Timing Matters A Little

Four nutrients here — A, D, E and the carotenoids — are fat soluble, which is why we suggest taking Gelagen within half an hour of a meal rather than in isolation. The B vitamins and vitamin C are water soluble and absorb regardless. Chewing rather than swallowing matters more than people expect, because a chewable is built to begin breaking down in the mouth.
